Subversive Control Act (1950)

Whereas, a spirit of hysteria has been manifested in the country as reflected in Congress by the passage of the McCarran Bill which fosters the development of fear and thought control, and

Whereas, we firmly believe that this law and similar legislations undermine our freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, and

Whereas, we are of the firm belief that the effect of such legislation inevitably leads to the development of “police state” measures which result in a breakdown of democracy, and

Whereas, President Truman, in his veto message, stated that previously existing legislation is adequate for national security,

Now Therefore Be It Resolved, that the National Women’s League of the United Synagogue, in convention assembled, urge the repeal of the Omnibus Subversive Control measure (McCarran Law) and the abolition of the House Un-American Activities Committee.
