THE TIMES THEY WERE A-CHANGING—Jews and 1960s Movie Musicals

The 1960s was a tumultuous decade marked by major social and political change, including the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the emergence of a widespread counterculture, and unprecedented protests against the status quo.

During the 1960s, the film industry slowly adapted to these changing times, but Hollywood musicals remained popular.

As they did since the birth of Hollywood, Jews shaped the art of cinema including the film musical.

This course will explore the contributions made by Jewish writers, composers, directors, and stars to the many 1960s Hollywood musicals.

Some of the films explored will include: Bells Are Ringing, My Fair Lady, Funny Girl, Hello Dolly, Mary Poppins, and The Sound of Music.

Each standalone session will explore different films and their creators.
