Israel – Tourism (1986)

The upsurge in terrorist activity in Europe and the Middle East is causing a serious decline in Israel’s tourism industry as more and more people are reluctant to travel abroad.

Tourism is Israel’s number one source of income and provides employment for more than 20,000 people. Annual revenues from tourism exceed $1.4 billion. It has been universally recognized that El Al security measures are the most stringent.

It is incumbent upon Jews the world over to visit Israel. To bow to terrorist threats is to give a victory to violence and lawlessness.

Therefore, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism urges its members to:

  1. Make visiting Israel a top priority. If you are among the 80% of American Jews who have never been to Israel, now is the time to go. If you are among the 20% who have been there, now is the time to revisit.
  2. Encourage Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies and celebration of other milestones in Israel.
  3. Promote congregation and community tours to Israel.
  4. Promote Ramah, USY pilgrimages and other Jewish programs to Israel among synagogue youth.
  5. Encourage participation in adult volunteer programs in Israel.
