We moved to a new suburb north of Toronto and worked to develop a 400-member Conservative synagogue. I became acquainted with Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and their treasure trove of learning, rituals, and leadership possibilities. It was through WLCJ I made lifelong friendships, learned about sisterhoods, programming, and problem-solving. This experience provided the tools that also helped me throughout my professional and volunteer careers.
As time passed, my husband and I relocated to a downtown condo that offered easy walking and the vibrance of the city. Sadly, synagogues were too far away, and we found ourselves looking at other options close by. The priorities and demands of my life required more of my time, and I stepped back from my WLCJ roles. This new life left me a bit isolated and wanting, as I missed the camaraderie and involvement that WLCJ provided.
I decided that a WL Individual Membership could keep me connected. Many of the programs and meetings could easily be accessed online, and I was still able to dip my toe into their vast pool of knowledge, projects, and their fabulous how-to modules. This has afforded me an invaluable connection to many new people, ideas, and experiences, thus allowing me a connection on my terms, my time, and my availability.
The support system that is Women’s League that I loved for so many years, that taught me so much, that I owed my career to, was still there at my fingertips. Why WL Individual Membership? Why not? So very much for so very little. It’s a viable option for so many who simply, for whatever circumstance, cannot connect through conventional Conservative Sisterhood memberships. I’m delighted to be reconnected and happy to say I’m a member!
