Parashat Korach 5784 – Rosh Chodesh Tammuz

by Rabbi Ellen S. Wolintz-Fields

Pirkei Avot 5:17, Ethics of our Ancestors, teaches. “Every argument that is for [the sake of] heaven’s name, it is destined to endure. But if it is not for [the sake of] heaven’s name — it is not destined to endure. What is [an example of an argument] for [the sake of] heaven’s name? The argument of Hillel and Shammai. What is [an example of an argument] not for [the sake of] heaven’s name? The argument of Korach and all of his congregation.” This week’s Torah reading is named for the very same Korach who was the epitome of the contentious individual, and started a rebellion against Moses, questioning why Moses and Aaron were the leaders. Korach was the epitome of the contentious individual. We probably all know people like Korach. We often say “two Jews, three opinions.” People are created with two ears to listen and one mouth to speak. Therefore, let us remember to listen respectfully, even if we disagree. Am Yisrael Chai!  The People of Israel Live!
