MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger

Abby J. Leibman has been President & CEO of MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger since 2011. Prior to her current tenure, Ms. Leibman had a consulting practice to assist social justice organizations, businesses, and public institutions to meet the challenges of growth and change, including leadership development, managing diversity, and implementing strategies to respond to discrimination. Among her clients, Ms. Leibman worked with Jewish World Watch, Food Forward, L.A.’s BEST, UCLA Hillel, Valley Beth Shalom Synagogue, the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, and the Progressive Jewish Alliance (now Bend the Arc). For over 20 years, Ms. Leibman has worked with and led some of California’s most prominent nonprofit organizations, including the California Women’s Law Center, which she co-founded and directed for 12 years. MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger
Inspired by Jewish values and ideals, MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger is a national organization fighting to end hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds in the United States and Israel. For almost 40 years, MAZON has been committed to ensuring that vulnerable people have access to the resources they need to put food on the table. MAZON is a leading voice in the anti-hunger field, developing strategic initiatives focused on communities that are at particular risk of hunger and have often been overlooked. Izzy Waxman is the Executive Director of MAZON Canada, the Jewish Response to Hunger – a role that perfectly combines her love for Jewish community organizing, social justice and food. In the last five years, she’s led Mazon Canada through significant growth even through a period of massive instability in the food aid sector alongside her Co-ED, Grant Goodman. She’s also: served as Administrative Director for Machaneh Lev (a week-long summer camp for LGBTQ+ Jewish youth); led as Summer Director at Camp Gesher; taught Kabbalah 101 at Lishma (a 20s/30s Jewish learning space); lectured as Congregation Darchei Noam’s Social Justice Scholar in Residence; and facilitated often at Jewish peer-learning events like Limmud and the MNJCC’s Tikkun Leil Shavuot. When she’s not busy running campaigns and building relationships to feed vulnerable people, she loves to study Jewish mysticism, cook ancestral recipes, and is founding a Jewish Renewal congregation in Toronto… And she’s currently learning to cartwheel!

MAZON Canada supports food projects across the country, from Ontario to Nova Scotia to Nunavut, impacting people of all ages, ethnicities, faiths and abilities. We prioritize partnerships with small, community-run programs, including food banks, shelters, school meal programs, community gardens and more.
