 \nIn stereotypical portrayals of Jewish life in the Eastern European shtet
 l\, religion and spirituality are understood as being men’s domain\, whi
 le women looked after the home and business so their husbands and sons cou
 ld dedicate themselves to Torah. Although the extent to which women were e
 xcluded from patriarchal religious life should not be downplayed\, scholar
 s have revealed the “intensely lived religious lives” of traditional A
 shkenazi women\, some of whom even performed important ritual leadership r
 oles.\n\nThis course will look at some of these forgotten female ritualist
 s of the shtetl: the&nbsp\;bobes&nbsp\;(midwives and healers)\,&nbsp\;shpr
 ekherins&nbsp\;(exorcists)\,&nbsp\;klogerins&nbsp\;(professional mourners)
 \,&nbsp\;feldmesterins&nbsp\;(cemetery and grave measurers)\, and&nbsp\;zo
 gerins&nbsp\;(a title used to refer both to prayer leaders or shamanesses)
 . We will also highlight the cemetery as an often-overlooked site of spiri
 tual activity. We will discuss how these roles challenge the dominant narr
 atives of Jewish history and “tradition\,” and also consider their rel
 evance for Jewish practice today.&nbsp\;\n\nREGISTER\nCOST\n$180 for six s
